Representation can mean the showing of reality buy filmmaking and media. Sometimes that can be a useful to use it but sometimes not, it all depends on the way of representation. The representation may have a massive effect on a viewer. For example some of us have never been to New York, seen Hollywood celebrities, visited some beautiful tourist attractions etc. But with the help of representation we think that we already know everything about place or person. The keyword is ''think'' because representation doesn't give us the exact picture of reality, it just takes some parts of it.
The full trust in representations may sometimes give us the false showing of what is partly reality but not exact reality. That is called stereotypes. By representation of false reality we can think that it's always snowy in Russia, French people are romantic and British people drink a lot of tea. These factors can be seen but the problem is that it's not fully true.
But also stereotypes can be useful especially in films. For example in thriller film if you a man wearing who is following main character we can already identify him as not the good person. Also main heroes are sometimes more attractive than villains so we can know who is protagonist and antagonist.
It's also important that representation can be different depending on genres. For example if it's a comedy, there will probably be stereotypes that make us laugh and if it's detective or thriller there will be stereotypes that can make us differ antagonist and protagonist.
Representation is also used to convey a certain idea to the viewer so it follows a certain ideology because of which that idea is conveyed. It also can be both good and bed, everything depends on topics that are going to be conveyed. Usually propaganda is associated as something bad because you can promote something that's not always accepted by the audience but it's important to know that promoting the ideas that audience likes is propaganda too.
