Tragicomedy of the Short Film

Tragicomedy is a genre which combines elements of both comedy and drama. Tragicomedy can be either a serious play with a happy ending (which is not a case with the simple drama) or a tragic play with a touch of humorous moments in order to lighten the mood. The point of tragicomedy is to evoke sympathy for the suffering of characters in order to expose responsible, social circumstances. Presenting human dignity, it gives the audiences hope and comfort.

The discrepancy between drama and comedy in tragicomedy can contrast both in coexistence and in opposition to each other or it can merge in identical cooperation. In ''laughter while crying'' syntheses, comic and tragic elements mutually reinforce each other: empathy and distance occur in constant switching and can even appear in paradoxical coincidence where they are indistinguishable.

Unlike drama, tragicomedy gives the audience positive moments which calm the people down after the tense scene and also the films of this genre usually have a positive ending. Also, unlike comedy, tragicomedy has a more complex character development so both protagonist and supporting characters feel to be more realistic. That's the genre in which my short film is going to be because the songs of ''Pet Sounds'' and their themes are perfect to fit in this genre because there is a serious character development and also light moments which calm the pressure scenes.

Opening Scene in ''Ghost in the Shell'' (1995)

The anime thriller ''Ghost in the Shell'' was directed in 1995 by Mamoru Oshii and is based on 1989's manga with the same title written by Masamune Siro. Critical Reflection

One of the most challenging parts of the short film convention was the length. In my first pitch the story was so complex that it would about 15 minutes while my main task has to last no more than 5 minutes. In addition, the short films which inspired me like Eric Kissack’s ‘’The Gunfighter’’ (2014) and Charles Williams’ ‘’All These Creatures’’ (2018) lasted around 10 minutes. But what was on my side is that another key convention of short films is that their story can be simple. So I made my pitch less complex so it could last around 5 minutes. Talking about sound, the only non-diegetic sound in the film is the music which sets the mood for the film. In the short films the music can play as important role as characters, setting, props etc. It sets a certain mood of the character so it is much easier for audience to understand his/her motifs. However each piece of music has an author who owns copyright protected by the law. It means that he/she is the only one to have the right for benefiting from the result of his intellectual activity and other people, as a general rule, can't use the work without his consent.
