Production Update

Hello, my production work has had to take a break because of Year 12 exam week but I'm still continuing to work on planning and filming my final two minute opening in between my revision for this and other subjects.

Firstly I'm developing my storyboard about what exact shot and action should be in a scene. Secondly I talked with my teacher about the day of filming my main task and we decided to do on Thursday lunchtime. But the filming will take only approximately 50 minutes because one of my actors is having exams after lunchtime so I think that we will also continue to film on Friday. On Thursday I'm planning to film the bench and cafe scene. This won't be easy to do in just 50 minutes so I will have to push effort because on Friday I already want to do the next scenes.

First scene is having main character sitting on a bench

Second scene is a mix of two scenes in a cafe (first is main character finding out that he owns money to some guys, and the second part of the scene is a stranger entering to offer money)

In the third and last scene the main character receives a suitcase of money from stranger and he finds the knife and gun. On this cliffhanger the opening scene finishes.

Evaluation of My Preliminary Task 2023

During this weekend I have filmed the short extract which will then be developed into a big short film which I'll release in the end. Though in my opinion, for preliminary task the job was done pretty well, I still think that there are some aspects to improve. The first thing to which I payed attention to is the wind noise which interferes the audiences to immerse into the film. It happened because though I was given a mic, I found it useless because my extract didn't have any dialogues so as I thought, there was no point in regulating the sound, I was mistaken. When I start making my main task, I'll definitely use the mic in order to prevent such situations. Another thing which needs an improvement is the moment in extract when the protagonist sees the group of boys walking and then smiles. Average Short Film Budget

Considering that the short film is obviously shorter than feature-length, the less locations take place, the less amount of actors involved, the production itself takes not so much time, so as a result the budget of these films will be way, way lower. Because my film is the Year 13 advanced portfolio, I am not going to have a budget and no one is going to be paid for production. However, while doing the filmmaking, we use the expensive equipment which is the digital camera, camera stand, microphone, sound recording. We're not paying for it for my film but that's what the team usually does when they make a professional movie. Of course with the rise of Internet everyone is able to create a unique project which doesn't have to cost money. Basically, everyone is able to film a short movie even on his or her phone. Critical Reflection

One of the most challenging parts of the short film convention was the length. In my first pitch the story was so complex that it would about 15 minutes while my main task has to last no more than 5 minutes. In addition, the short films which inspired me like Eric Kissack’s ‘’The Gunfighter’’ (2014) and Charles Williams’ ‘’All These Creatures’’ (2018) lasted around 10 minutes. But what was on my side is that another key convention of short films is that their story can be simple. So I made my pitch less complex so it could last around 5 minutes. Talking about sound, the only non-diegetic sound in the film is the music which sets the mood for the film. A big influence on my music choice for the film was The Beach Boys studio album ‘’Pet Sounds’’ (1966) which is a concept album with songs linked to each other.
