Why Did I Choose ''All These Creatures''?

First thing why I chose ''All These Creatures'' is that the main character can be an inspiration to protagonist of my movie. In ''All These Creatures'' the main hero explores the mental state of his father and links it with the cicadas which symbolizes changes. This is similar to the protagonist of my film but instead he explores love, alienation, life and everything which would make him grown up. Secondly, most of the ''All These Creatures'' sound is non-diegetic so the vast majority of sound is either the narrator speaking or the film score music. I plan to use the same technique but instead the non-diegetic sound is going to be the songs from ''Pet Sounds'' album on which my film is partly based. Also I'll try to make my movie have more dialogue scenes. But overall, I loved how non-diegetic sound is possible to set as strong mood as diegetic sound and I hope that the ''Pet Sounds'' songs will play an

Average Short Film Budget

Considering that the short film is obviously shorter than feature-length, the less locations take place, the less amount of actors involved, the production itself takes not so much time, so as a result the budget of these films will be way, way lower. Because my film is the Year 13 advanced portfolio, I am not going to have a budget and no one is going to be paid for production. However, while doing the filmmaking, we use the expensive equipment which is the digital camera, camera stand, microphone, sound recording. We're not paying for it for my film but that's what the team usually does when they make a professional movie. Of course with the rise of Internet everyone is able to create a unique project which doesn't have to cost money. Basically, everyone is able to film a short movie even on his or her phone. But I was talking about the film in which a large team is involved, something which is the work not only of one person (director/screenwriter) but also of everyone

Three Elements of Short Film Structure

Short films are very limited in length. So by their very nature they restrict the number of ideas you can explore, the characters you can imagine, and so on. Because of this, you have to make very different decisions when it comes to plot structure, characters, conflict, and idea choice than you would for a longer film. So here are three elements that form the structure of the short films. 1. The short film should only explore one major concept or idea For more traditional narratives, you may be trying to send a simple message or communicate a belief. Whatever that may be, it’s simple and to the point like ''Selfishness leads to suffer''. On the other hand, your film might be more concept driven. For example ‘A quiet couple on a road-trip at night are actually vampires travelling to find their next victim.’ or ‘A man finding items for his grocery shopping list is revealed to be scavenging for his family after the apocalypse.’ That can be anything which includes the unex

5 Advices For Writing a Story For the Short Film

There has never been a better time to learn the craft of writing short film scripts. Interest in and access to creating and viewing short films and episodes of series has exploded worldwide, for both TV and the Internet. A great short film can also open doors for you in the film industry. But writing a successful short film story isn’t easy. It requires the craft and concentration.  So here are five suggestions for crafting a screenplay of a short film. 1. Find a small, specific, significant idea you can tell well in a short script Short films shouldn’t have the big story ideas because otherwise it will not be able to the film’s length and as a result, the movie can’t breathe. So for short films it’s very important to have touching but also small and simple story that will be easily understandable by audience. 2. Craft a complex character with a small, significant want It’s important the script to know what main character wants because it’s on of the main ''shortcuts to the i

The Short Film ''The Gunfighter''

I have recently watched an amazing western short film ''The Gunfighter'' (2014) directed by Eric Kissack. The synopsis of a film is when main character enters the saloon, everyone there inside starts hearing the narrator's speech. The storyteller starts sharing the secrets which everyone in a saloon tries to hide and in the end the unpredictable consequences happen. What I really enjoyed in a movie is that the elements of sound which 99% act as non-diegetic sounds (soundtrack, narrator) in the films here turn into diegetic because the characters are able to hear it. I really loved it and for me that's a pity that the 9 minutes passed so quickly. Here's the link, enjoy- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXfltmzRG-g&ab_channel=TanvirAkhtar

The Best Short Films of the 21st Century According to xdrfmag

Here is a list of the best 21st century short films according to the xdrfmag website Psychologically p rofound and thoroughly engaging,  ''Deeper Than Yesterday'' (2010) knows exactly how to tow the fine line between a captivating piece of entertainment and an esoteric social commentary on the human condition.   Both deeply  disturbing and fantastically captivating, ''Deeper Than Yesterday'' may easily be one of the best, if not the single greatest short film of the millennium. Featuring arguably what is the  finest dialogue ever conceived in a short f ilm, Martin  McDonaugh’s  Oscar-winning '' Six Shooter'' (2004)  is a hilariously macabre masterpiece made poignant to boot,  thanks to its riveting ensemble cast and consistently surprising narrative twists .  Whilst not a film that impresses in visual scale, ''Six Shooter'' is the type of accomplishment that banks entirely on the complexity of the themes of loss that it

Tragicomedy of the Short Film

Tragicomedy is a genre which combines elements of both comedy and drama. Tragicomedy can be either a serious play with a happy ending (which is not a case with the simple drama) or a tragic play with a touch of humorous moments in order to lighten the mood. The point of tragicomedy is to evoke sympathy for the suffering of characters in order to expose responsible, social circumstances. Presenting human dignity, it gives the audiences hope and comfort. The discrepancy between drama and comedy in tragicomedy can contrast both in coexistence and in opposition to each other or it can merge in identical cooperation. In ''laughter while crying'' syntheses, comic and tragic elements mutually reinforce each other: empathy and distance occur in constant switching and can even appear in paradoxical coincidence where they are indistinguishable.  Unlike drama, tragicomedy gives the audience positive moments which calm the people down after the tense scene and also the films of t

Use of Sound

Sound is important in film because it engages the audience: it helps with conveying information, adds value to the certain moment of the movie, evokes emotional response, emphasizes what's happening on screen and indicates the mood. When it's used properly, it can play not the last role. Although sound is often considered as after-throught for post-production, the bad sound can ruin the film because even though the rest is done well, the bad sound will not allow audience to dive into the film and plot. There are two types of sound. One of them is called diegetic sound which originates from within the film. It's any type of sound which is happened in the plot and characters can hear it. It can be everything which is considered part of the film's world, for example dialogues, action, phone call, music which characters listen to etc.  The opposite to diegetic sound is non diegetic. This type of sound is everything which is not linked to the world and character can't he

My Ideas for the Film

Music Copyright in Short Films

In the short films the music can play as important role as characters, setting, props etc. It sets a certain mood of the character so it is much easier for audience to understand his/her motifs. However each piece of music has an author who owns copyright protected by the law. It means that he/she is the only one to have the right for benefiting from the result of his intellectual activity and other people, as a general rule, can't use the work without his consent. In order to use the music of any artist or composer, it's important to sign a license agreement in which a permission is given to paste the artist's music into the film. How it happens, normally you go on the musician's main site in order to ask them about your project and why you want to paste the music you need. After that, maybe in a couple of days, the agency gives a permission. Talking about the price of copyright, everything depends on the certain artist, sometimes you have to pay money in order to ge

Codes and Conventions of the Short Films

For making the short film it's important to follow the certain codes and conventions because they are used to represent the characters, places, the message which film wants to deliver etc. Basically the short film codes and conventions are similar to feature-length films although there are some differences. Budget: Unlike the feature-length movies the shorts budget is quite low because considering the small amount of time the plot will not have to take place in many locations so not too much money is going to be spent. As a result, some actors would work for free so most of them work for getting an experience. Considering the small budget, it can result that the directors are not dependent on the large corporations/studios so there's a high probability that the film would follow the formula of film d'auteur.                                                                                     Length: The average short film lasts around 15-20 minutes however it doesn't rea

Advanced Portfolio

Hi everyone. This is still me, Andrii Azarchenko and as I am in Year 13 now, I have started working on my advanced portfolio. For it I was given four options: music promotion package; film promotion package; documentary package; short film package. I chose the last option because I want to try how skilled I am in making the real short film which doesn't last just 2 minutes but way longer. Usually the first task for filmmaking is to write a pitch and then a script so there will be a ready plot for the movie. But in my case I firstly focus on the casting because it's very compulsory to understand the real situation and to know whether you can afford what is in the script or not. And after finding the actors it will be much easier for me to create a plot with characters taken from my actors.
